We took a pleasurable bus ride up the hill north of Vienna above Grinzing to visit a place called Kahlenberg… and later joyfully walked back down through the Vienna Woods until the shortest legs of our little group were too tired to keep going. It is a beautiful thing to be able to leave the busy, bustling city life in Vienna behind for an afternoon and find the peace and solitude of the woods.
The bus ride up to Kahlenberg took less than 30 minutes from Heiligenstadt, which is the end U-bahn station just one stop up from the closest one to where we are living. It was a beautiful day to take in the view of central Vienna and the Danube, although I was a bit disappointed to discover that I was right: the view of Vienna and the Danube does not have the same artistic appeal that Budapest offers. But it is still gorgeous and impressive and offers a nice bird's eye view that gives a much clearer perspective of the city's layout than one can gain on foot. Rumor has it that on a clear day, one can see into Hungary and Bratislava (capital city of Slovakia) from the Kahlenberg overlook point. It must help to know what to look for... J
Note: We live close to the Spittelau Incinerator Plant tower in the foreground (designed by our friend Hundertwasser himself)... In the distance you can see the Stephansdom church and the Belvedere palace...

ReplyDeleteThere's just something about sisters. I love all those pics of them together. Looks like the trip to Vienna Woods was a success. The views ARE beautiful, regardless of how you look at it. BTW, the pics with all 3 kids aren't any less special than the ones of the girls. That Cade - he's great enough to deserve some praise for the fellas all on his own. Love those kids...oh, and you too, of course.
